After breakfast he went to his favorite leather chair to sign letters. As he was signing letters, his legs propped up on a stool, Just before lunch was to be served, he dropped his pen and complained of a sudden headache. Then he slumped forward in his chair and lost consciousness. A doctor was summoned and he was carried to bed; it was immediately obvious that he had suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage
