Cleopatra's Last Meal...

Cleopatra VII Philopator. Queen of Egypt.
She was living in denial, because... Well she was literally
living off de Nile. De Nile river (denial). Large river that runs through Egypt. Get it?
Er, okay.
Cleopatra was one of the most well known rulers of Egypt. There were many queens of Egypt, but the only one that stands out to this day is Cleopatra.
As powerful women rise to power, Cleopatra certainly knew how the game was played, and played it well.
She co-ruled Egypt with her father Ptolemy XII Auletes.
Just to show you that her lust for power knew no bounds, after her father's passing she ruled with her brother/husband Ptolemy XIV. After Ptolemy's passing, she then ruled with her son Caesarion.
Ever moving up, she eyed the Roman empire. Constantly expanding, she consummated a relationship with Julius Caesar that solidified her grip on the throne. However, a little group led by Brutus nixed that deal and Cleopatra soon aligned with Mark Antony, with whom she produced twins. She later married Mark Antony and gave birth to another son.
With the Roman empire's baking you'd think her grip on Egypt would be unquestionable. However Antony's rival and Caesar's legal heir, Octavian, brought the might of Rome against Egypt. Unable to stand against the might of the Roman navy. Egypt was swept up by the empire. Antony committed suicide and Cleopatra followed after him.

She enjoyed one last deadly meal. It was

Figs

Not your run of the mill figs. These figs had the secret surprise of a deadly asp hiding in the bottom of the bowl. You know what they say about figs? You just can't eat one. Reaching deeper into the bottom of the bowl for the next fig was her last, and thus ended a dynasty.

Mitsugoro Bando VIII Last Meal...

I say Mitsugoro Bando VIII and you say____.

Don't know who Bando is? Here in the United States, you'd get blank stares, but in Japan, Bando is, or was a living national treasure.
Mitsugoro was a Kabuki actor. Kabuki, is a form of traditional Japanese theater.
He was considered the Marlon Brando of Kabuki theater.

Alas, Mitsugoro liked to tempt fate, and fate he surely tempted. He went out to dinner with some friends January 1975. The dish was a memorable one, not only for it was his last, but for the very nature of the dish.

His last meal was:

Fugu liver - Liver from Puffer fish.

Fugu is highly toxic. The fish contains lethal amounts of the poison tetrodotoxin in the internal organs, especially the liver and the ovaries, but also in the skin and the testicles. It is perhaps for this reason that Fugu is considered a delicacy in Japan. Japanese chefs have to specially train to prepare for this dish for 2-3 years, and even then they have to take a series of test before they are licensed Fugu chefs.
The test consists of a written test, a fish identification test, and a practical test of preparing fugu and then eating it. Of course you'd fail the final exam after eating an ill prepared Fugu liver, wouldn't you.
Unfortunately for Mistsugoro, he just didn't eat one servering of Fugu liver, but four. Not one spin at Russian roulette, but four go's at it. Poor fella was just begging to die.

Jean-Claude Paul's Last Meal...

All I have to say is don't mess with Jean-Claude Paul's wife.
Man, is she a killer. . . Literally!
Here's the deal.
Jean-Claude was an Haitian army colonel under Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Under Baby Doc's regime, things were brutal under Haiti's political system. It was only when Baby Doc fled the country in 1986 that Haiti underwent a number of coup before Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president, and even then there were a number of military coup d'etat's he had to deal with. Old Jean-Claude of course needed to fund such actions as well as setup some wealth for himself. Jean-Claude, not happy with Haitian army pay decided to help facilitate cocaine shipments from Columbia, through Haiti into the United States. The payoff was about $40 million dollars in trafficking. Unwilling to share in the profits, Mrs. Paul felt a little slighted and decided that perhaps she should just off her husband and take the $40 million for herself.
She treated to Jean-Claude to a special meal to help things along.

Jean-Claude's last meal was:

Soup Joumou (pumpkin soup)

The soup was poisoned and old Jean-Claude was cocaine trafficking no more.

Last Meal Of The 1,000th Person Executed In US Since Reinstatement Of Capital Punishment

Kenneth Lee Boyd was executed December 2nd 2005 by lethal injection.
Vietnam War vet and convicted murder, he became the 1000th person to be executed in the United States since the Supreme Court reinstatated the death pentaly in 1976.
Unfortunately for Boyd, he didn't want to be remembered in life as Mr. 1000. Hopes of clemency from the Govenor never materialized.

In life as in death, we all get a last meal. Boyd was a meat and potato man for sure.

His last meal was:

New York strip steak
A baked potato with sour cream
Salad with ranch dressing
Cola

He got no dessert.
Should have left room for jello though.

Thanksgiving...

Here at Your Last Meal, we talk about the last meals of the famous, not so famous and the convicted. However for every last meal, there is a first meal. The theme this week is Thanksgiving.

There was a first Thanksgiving. Edward Winslow, who was a leader of the pilgrim colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gave this account of the first Thanksgiving.

"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, Many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest King Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

The feast went on for 3 days and they had a guest of 90 indians from the local area.

They ate:

Vensison provided by the Indians

Duck

Goose

Turkey

Swan.

Face it. Without the Indians help, the colonies would have had a hard time adjusting to the new land they were living in. It is on this note, that those colonist were thankful for the help. The question I ask of the dear readers of Your Last Meal is, what are you thankful for?

Allen Ginsberg's Last Meal...

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was an American Beat poet.
He is best known for Howl a long poem about consumer society's negative human values.
With a classic opening line "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness", Howl became scandalous and was actually banned due to for obscenity. However the piece stood on it's own through 1st Amendment Rights.
Ginsberg hung out with the likes of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and John Clellon Holmes and other greats of the Beat generation. Thus gave birth to the Hippie generation, and hell it all went downhill from there. Hell, even the FBI put him on the watch list as a major security threat. A threat from what I'll never know. Perhaps the Man or the Establishment that beats us down everyday...you dig?

Ginsberg ran into some health issues during the late nineties. Really wasn't good news as the diagnosis was liver cancer. He died on April 5th, 1997. Before he died, he had one last meal (don't we all?)

It was:

Fish Chowder.

He never finished the meal, and the remnants of the meal are actually frozen in the interests of an Ginsberg museum sometime in the near future.

Snap your fingers for approval.

Robert E. Lee's Last Meal...

Robert E. Lee. General-in-chief to the Confederate armies
during the American Civil War. It was after the war that Lee settled down and tried to resume a normal life. He applied for post-war amnesty, but was never granted due to some bureaucratic mix ups in Washington D.C.

It turns out that Lee never got a pardon until President Gerald Ford granted him a pardon and U.S. Congress restored his citizenship in 1975. Quite a haul considering he'd been dead for 105 years. Lee wasn't a total bad guy, considering he was on the wrong side of the war in slavery. There were many debates through the years, that he never supported slavery, even though he himself owned about 10-12 slaves.

In his later years, he became president of Washington College in Virgina.
It was only in September of 1870, that Robert E. Lee fell ill. Unable to speak, all his doctors could do was put him to bed and hope for the best. It appeared he suffered a stroke.
The stroke damaged the frontal lobes of the brain, which made speech impossible, and made him unable to cough or expectorate. This would lead to his demise.

Loosing strength, a friend, from the Virgina Military Institute, sent out for a meal to restore Lee's health. This meal would turn out to be Lee's last.

It was:

Beef Tea.

Lee died two days later after being fed the meal. What had happened is the stroke put Lee in a position that he couldn't cough. The liquids from the Beef tea found their way into his lungs and pneumonia developed. With no ability to cough, Lee died from the effects of pneumonia .

However, don't let Beef tea detract you from trying it, especially if you or a loved one is sick. The tea does nourish really sick people back to health, as attested by many people who have tried it.

The recipe is below:

Beef Tea
1 lb Beef - prime lean beef.
1 c Water
1 t Salt

Put beef through a food grinder.
Place in top of double boiler and add the water. Simmer over a very low flame about 3-1/2 hours. Add salt. Strain and keep liquid in a cool place. If too strong, it may be diluted with some boiling water to strength desired.

Gladiator's Last Meal...

In ancient Rome, the sport of the day was gladiators fighting in the arena. It was the decimal equivalent of football in today's sports world. Initially rich private individuals organized these, often to gain political favor with the public, but was then monopolized by the Emperor to keep the good citizens happy.

Most gladiators were slaves sold into fighting. They were also prisoners of war, and sentenced criminals. There was also the occasional volunteer, which was crazy, since your life expectancy in this profession was to die young. Only noted fighters that outlived the others were a celebrity fighter named Flamma, who died at the age of 30 after winning 21 of 34 fights. Another respected fighter, Felix, was one of the more long-lived, dying at age 45 after receiving Roman citizenship. Of course the life expectancy of a gladiator didn't just fall on the combatant's skill in the arena, but to the spectators themselves. Once a gladiator could fight no more, he would raise his left hand to the emperor or the highest public official present. At that point, the emperor looked to the crowd for their recommendation. If they showed thumbs down and shouted "Iugula!" (Cut his throat!), he was killed. If they showed thumbs up and shouted "Mitte!" (Release him!"), he was allowed to leave the arena and have his wounds treated. This was a plus since gladiators got the best medical treatment in the Roman Empire.

Now since gladiators were the equivalent of the sports stars we have today, they needed to stay healthy and energized. The meals they ate showed this. A typical last meal a gladiator would enjoy was:

Barley grains (thought to protect the arteries with fat and prevent bleeding to death)
Boiled beans
Oatmeal and, ash, believed to help fortify the body.

It turns out gladiators weren't these muscular fighting men, like Russell Crowe in the movie Gladiator, but in fact were fat vegetarians.
Gladiators ate so much barely that they were called hordearii or "barley men."
Quite a misconception on how movies, films, and even painting portray gladiators and how they actually lived.

Mohammad Atta's Last Meal

The biggest tragedy to date in the 21st century has been the
attack against the United States on September 11th, 2001. The poster boy for such attacks has been none other than Mohammad Atta. Atta was the ring leader in the suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York city. He was believed to have been the pilot that hijacked and took control of American Airlines flight 11 from Boston.
He along with 81 passengers flew into the North Tower at 8:47am.

Rollback to September 10th. Atta did meet with another Al Qaida operative the night before the attacks. They met at a Pizza Hut in South Portland, Maine. The meeting was short, but it did allow Atta to enjoy one last meal before final preparations were made.

Atta's last meal was of course

Pizza from Pizza Hut.
It's uncertain if he ordered pepperoni or just plain cheese pizza. We're not sure he went for the meat lovers special or perhaps he went with the veggie lover's delight. Regardless for such a waste of space on the mark of humanity, perhaps he just deserved the bland meager offerings that Liberace ate before he went silently into the night, instead of a popular dish enjoyed by millions of peace-loving Americans.

Bonnie And Clyde's Last Meal...

Most infamous gansters in history, Bonnie & Clyde. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow blazed their way into history during their crime spree from 1931 till their death's in 1934.

Bonnie and Clyde were ambushed and killed May 23, 1934 at 9:10 am. They were shot by a posse of four Texas and two Louisiana officers who setup an elaborate ambush to nab the infamous duo. Actually the posse acted in haste since they clearly out numbered Bonnie and Clyde, and if they were interested in capture, they'd certainly would have brought a larger posse. However, the intent seemed to be to kill the two and with the help of the father of one of Clyde Barrow's gang, they formed a trap.

It was only when Clyde pulled his Ford V-8 over to the side of the road to chat with the father that the posse sprung into action. It was a slaughter and Bonnie and Clyde died under the hail of bullets that delivered both of them to their Maker.

However, as all things come to pass, Bonnie and Clyde did enjoy one last meal together. Before getting introduced to a high lead diet, Barrow and Parker had a small picnic. The meal they shared was:

SPAM sandwiches.

Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam...

Liberace's Last Meal...

Now some say Chico Marx was a great pianist and entertainter.
Others will say Victor Borge was the greatest. Now, for me, hands down Liberace was the greatest, not only in piano but in flamboyance. Serious, the guy had some major costume changes between piano sets, but sit him down in front of 88 keys? Enchanting music from such a talented performer.

Not many people know that In 1953 Liberace was named by Ripley's Believe It Or Not as "The Fastest Piano Player In The World" for playing 6,000 notes in 2 minutes. Also, not many people know that he was the first perfomer to demand and receive US$50,000 per week to play in Las Vegas.

His career was music-centric. He had a few movie flops like when he starred in Sincerely Yours in 1955 with Dorothy Malone, playing 31 songs throuhout the entire film. He was also a villian in the Adam West Batman television show of the 1960's, playing Chandell.

Alas, he had some ups and downs in his career during the late 70's. His career finally was starting to pick up again in the 80's, but he ran into some health issues. People noticed the weight loss, and asked questions. The response was he was on the new "watermelon diet."
The truth of the matter, was he was dying of AIDS. He died on February 4, 1987 at his winter house in Palm Springs, California.

Liberace did enjoy one last meal before dying. According to his personal chef, Liberace went out with a bland meal of

Cream of Wheat cereal with half and half and brown sugar.
And to think he did it wall for his brother George...

Anne Frank's Last Meal In Hiding...

In the thick of WWII, Germany was in the process of executing Hitler's "Final Solution" for the Jews, Slavs, and non-Aryan peoples of the world. Call it the "Final Solution" sure, but genocide is genocide and all for hate's sake. For the Jews, it was expulsion into ghettos and slums. From there it boiled down to total indifference and exodus to concentration camps. While the war raged on, nobody outside of Germany knew what was going on in the European theatre. It was only after the war that we truly saw the evil that dwells in people hearts. The millions upon millions of innocent souls that were tortured and killed all because of some whack job named Adolph Hitler. The faces behind the barbed wire. Innocent children. Babies. People who have done nothing but live. Gassed. If there was one face that haunts me, it is that of Anne Frank.
Anne Frank was born June 12th, 1929. to German-Jewish parents. Anne was the Frank's 2nd daughter. Anne grew up in Frankfurt for the first 4 years of her life. It was only in 1933, when Hitler came into power and anti-semetic violence grew, that the Franks moved from Germany to Amsterdam. The war came, and the Nazi regime spread out and annexed other countries. The Netherlands fells, and the Frank family was unable to escape. It was June of 1942 that Anne received an autograph book for her thirteenth birthday. She never used the book for autographs, but used it to write a diary. She wrote about herself, her family and friends, her school life, boys she flirted with and the places she liked to visit in her neighborhood. While these early entries demonstrate that in many ways her life was that of a typical schoolgirl, she also refers to changes that had taken place since the German occupation. Some references are seemingly casual and not emphasized. However in some entries Anne provides detail of the oppression that was steadily increasing. She wrote about the Star Of David she and her family members had to wear on their clothes. The persecution and restrictions enacted by the German occupation. It was only in July of 1942, that Otto Frank (Anne's father), decided to move the family into hiding, after her eldest daughter Margo was called to report to a Jewish relocation camp. The Frank family along with the Pels family and a dentist Fritz Pfeffer spent 2 years in a 2 room/1 toilet attic area behind the Opekta offices where Otto Frank used to work.
It was only after a tip off that the they were hiding there in August of 1944, that the GrÃzne Polizei raided the apartment. Anne and her family were removed and taken to Concentration camps. It was in March of 1945, that a Typhus outbreak hit the camp. It killed Anne and her sister Margo. They died only a few weeks before the camp was liberated by Allied forces.

The last meal Anne, her family had while in hiding was:

Potato or some vegetable soup
After the war, the only surviving member of the family was Otto Frank. He went back to the hiding place he and his family hid for 2 long years. Only remnant of note that he found, was Anne's diary. The diary today provides us with a unique look at the mind of a maturing individual and examines what life was like under Nazi occupation.
In an excerpt from the diary, Anne mentioned that there was good in everyone. I'd like to believe that, but after seeing the atrocities that the Nazi's perpetrated on innocent people, I tend to think we sometimes forget how good we can be.

Last Meal Funny Facts #2: Did you know...

The molecules making up all matter contains a huge amount of energy, as Einstein's E = mc^2 pointed out to us. Energy can also travel in the form of electromagnetic waves, such as heat, light, radio, and gamma rays. Your body is using metabolic energy from your last meal as you read this.

So keep eating and keep reading, Your Last Meal.

Last Meal On The Andrea Doria...

The SS Andrea Doaria. Oppulent ocean liner for the Società di navigazione Italia. With a gross tonnage of 29,100 tons and a capacity of over 1200 passenger and a crew of 500.

Like the Titanic, the Andrea Doria was Italy's largest, fastest, and safest ship. Well apparently not that safe.
It was July 25th, 1956, while sailing off the coast of Nantucket, bound for New York city. It was 11:10pm that evening, the final night of the voyage that disaster struck.
In heavy fog, the Swedish ship Stockholm struck the Andrea Doria. With a deep gash on it's starboard side, the Andrea Doria listed and started taking on water. What made the disaster different from the Titanic was the quick response of rescue teams. Also the ship stayed afloat for over 10 hours before finally sinking in the cold waters of the Atlantic. Only 40 people perished in this disaster as opposed to over a thousand from the Titanic.

Earlier that evening, there was one last dinner. A farewell dinner for the passengers. It was quite a feast.

Their last meal was:

Cocktails: Tomato juice or Grapefruit juice
Parma raw ham
Nantes sardines
Lingurienne olives
Butter
Salad Italienne
Clear beef broth in cup, hot or cold
Rice, squash and parsley
Consome with vermicellini, Andalouse
Gray snapper fillets, Belle Meuniere
Parsleyed potatoes
Roast Forli poulardine on a skewer
Mixed salad – French dressing
Tortoni ice cream cup
Saiwa biscuits
Basket of fresh fruit
Italian and American coffee – Tea
Gran Italian sparkling wine
Red table wine

Bugs Bunny's Last Meal...

By LES NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 17, 9:12 AM ET
Hollywood, California - Bugs Bunny, famed cartoon rabbit, adored by millions, was put to death early this morning by lethal injection. Mr. Bunny, was convicted of pigslaughter in the August 2001 murder of Porky Pig. Officers of the LA county sheriff's department found the carcass of Mr. Pig in the basement of Bugs Bunny's residence early Saturday morning back on August 11th 2001. FBI was called to the scene where ribs, pork shoulder and hamhocks were sitting in Bunny's freezer. A partially eaten breakfast of eggs, carrots and bacon was found in the kitchen. Pathologist where able to determine the bacon was from Mr. Pig.
After a lengthy trial and much publicity, it was a 5 man, 5 woman, 1 talking skunk and 1 talking cat that convicted Bugs Bunny of the murder. The Judge imposed the maximum punishment for the state, death.

Bugs Bunny enjoyed a last meal of carrot stew, french fries and a Mr. Pibb yesterday. He was walked to the execution chamber at 11:58pm last night. After talking with a minister, he was asked for any last statements. Mr. Bunny just stared to the ceiling and replied, "Ehhh, yeah, I asked for carrot soup and all I got was carrot stew. Ehhhh, I just wanted the reporters to know this, doc."
The warden gave the go ahead to start the execution at 12:01am. Thirty seconds after the start, Bugs took two or three breaths and let out a rattle of air. He was pronounced dead at 12:03am by Los Angles County coroners.
Funeral and burial is slated for later this week.

Gandhi's Last Meal...

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, died on January 30th, 1948. He was a national icon who led the struggle for India's independence from British colonial rule. Unlike today's reformist, who use terrorism, torture, and violence to inflict change, Gandhi was opposed any form of terrorism or violence, instead using only the highest moral standards. His philosophy of nonviolence had influenced national and international nonviolent resistance movements. The Civil Rights movement being a perfect example.
Before the G-man was assassinated, he enjoyed one last meal. It's a bit unusual for my taste in Indian cusine. Mr. Passive-resistance liked it fruity for sure.
His last meal:

Consisted of goat's milk, cooked vegetables, oranges, and a concoction of ginger, sour lemons, and strained butter with the juice of aloe.

Over a bed of basimati rice with garlic nan? Forget about it!

A Soldier From WWI Last Meal...

Trench warfare. The most brutal of fighting was taking place. After the Battle of the Aisne in September of 1914, the German and Allied armies dug in. What started out as a simple trench, turned into an immense series of interlocking tunnels and trenches. Soldiers would sit in trenches, day and night. Peeking over the top of the trench ever so carefully across "no man's land" toward the enemy fortifications. Shots fired. Mustard gas thrown. To be gassed in the trenches were a certain and painful death. Struggling WWI soldiers at the time had to eat a healthy well balanced meal during those harrowing and desperate times. What did Uncle Sam pack for our doughboys?

A solders last meal would be:

Roast beef, corned beef, salmon, or sardines
Salt
Sugar,
Soluble coffee
Alcohol
Cigarettes

Each meal unit was packed in a large, galvanized tin container, designed to protect the contents from the poison gas the Germans loved to use so much.

Charles Lindbergh's Last Meal Onboard The Spirit Of St. Louis

As history would have it. Charles Lindbergh was not the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Historically, Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly non-stop from New York to Paris. Previous flights were done in stages. What made Lindbergh's unique was it was non-stop, no refueling or rest break. The entire trip took about 33 1/2 hours.
Since flying for that long with no break was a danger, especially to Lindbergh, whose main concern was falling asleep behind the controls, the last thing Linbergh wanted to do was eat. You see, Lindbergh was basically sleep deprived even before he took off that morning in New York. He had been up for almost 80 hours without sleep. 33 for the New York - Paris trip and 40 some odd hours before hand. He figured if you ate, then you would get sleepy from the meal, and from there crash into the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Lindbergh eventually succumbed to eating, since he wanted to keep his strength up. His one and only meal onboard the Spirit was:

A sandwich. Mystery meat no less.

When Lindbergh took off, May 1927, he left with a sack of five sandwiches and two canteens of water. He had described the sandwiches only as being made from "meat".
His log for the meal read as: "Why, it's past supper time! I untwist the neck of the paper bag, and pull out a sandwich... my first food since take-off... Bread and meat never touched my tongue like this before. One sandwich is enough. . . ."

Richard Nixon's Last Meal...In the White House

Richard Nixon, Tricky Dick to his fans. 37th president of the U.S.
Nixon resigned his position as President Of The United States, live on national T.V., on August 9th, 1974. It was through Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President or CREEP as it was fondly known, that brought demise to the presidency. The Watergate scandal fleshed out Nixon's administration's rampant corruption, illegality, and deceit. Tax evasion, bribes, illicit campaign contributions as well as secret bombings, and harassed opponents with executive agencies all came to light. One by one his cabinet resigned their position and eventually the cheese stands alone. To escape impeachment and jail, he resigned with his Vice president Gerald Ford to pardon him of any crimes he may or may not have committed.

His last meal in White House was:

Pineapple slices
Milk
Cottage Cheese

A wholesome meal for a relatively unwholesome administration.

Bonnie Lee Blakely's Last Meal...

Listen toots. The moon is blue and there is nothing you can do.
Vitello's restaurant was the place and one Robert Blake, famous for being Mickey in the Our Gang Little Rascal shorts and more so as Barretta, was dining with estranged wife Bonnie Lee Blakely. As fate would have it some rigmarole occurred and Bonnie Lee got it in the hat. Our man Mr. Blake when through millions in defense funds and a few months in the hoosegow before getting off on the crime and heading out to go "cowboying."

You know, cowboying? Heading out for a long drive before setting down in some dive. Playing pool with some Portuguese bar fly while downing shots of tequila.
Yet, Bonnie Lee wasn't all lily white here. Known con artist, she was probably making Blake's life a living hell to some degree. I'm uncertain that perhaps more than half of that hell was Blake's own engineering, but that's neither here or there. Bonnie was offed while Robert went back into Vitello's restaurant to look for his gun. Sad really. I mean, when I'm out dining with my wife, a 9mm keeps us company. You'd be surprised how attentive the matre'd and waiters are when you brandish a gun.

Anywho, Bonnie's last meal was typical Italian fare. She had:

Meat ravioli
Salad with blue cheese dressing
Iced tea

Robert dined on a delicious corkscrew pasta in garlic, olive oil, spinach & fresh tomatoes. Hell, they even named the dish after him as it shows up on the menu as, Fussilli e Minestra Alia Robert Blake.
The meal came to $18.45 sans tip, and the defense for offing your wife was at least 10 million.
Not sure if Blake tipped his lawyer. If not, he sure better.

Nicole Brown Simpson's Last Meal...

Nicole Brown Simpson, former wife of OJ Simpson, had a nice meal at the Mezzaluna cafe.

Her last meal was:

Rigatoni
Salad
Ice cream

The rigatoni and salad was eaten at the cafe. She left around 8:30pm to have ice cream with her family at a local shop. This information was verified in the autopsy report. It was around 9-9:30pm that she called the Mezzaluna cafe to report that she left her sunglasses there. Ron Goldman, always the helpful gentleman returned them around 10-10:30pm and by that time they were both slaughtered.

OJ did it. Didn't do it? It was a setup?
Really, if OJ is going to dedicate his life finding the real killers (quick look in the mirror OJ!) then I'm not sure he's going to find them on golf courses.

Julia Child's Last Meal...

The French Chef herself probably never had a last "special" meal. Last meal for sure, but she died peacefully in her sleep as opposed to knowing her demise.
She did, however, plan out her last meal for the past 40 years believe it or not. During an interview she gave this menu for her last meal, if she were to have one.

Caviar
Oysters
Foie gras
Pan-roasted duck
A poached pear or pungent sorbet with walnut cake.

Bon Appetite!

Black Hole's Last Meal...

Only 10 million light-years from Earth, this Black Hole had a final meal of

Centaurus A's galaxy.

This meal was followed by 10 trillion gallons of pepto bismol and an after dinner mint.

The Black Hole's reply to us, "The galaxy was tart on my tongue."

Jeholornis prima's Last Meal...

Fossil of a Jeholornis prima, a turkey-sized bird that lived more than 100 million years ago, shows that it's last meal in the Mesozoic era was:

Seeds.

Scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences are still studying the seeds to figure out from what type of plant they came from. The fossil is unusual since it was thought that most birds from that time period ate either fish, or insects.

Party on Jeholornis Prima!

Odel Barnes Jr's Last Meal Is A Little Hard To Swallow...

Odell Barnes, Jr.

The Crime: Helen Bass was murdered on November 30, 1989. She had been shot, bludgeoned, and stabbed. She was found face down on her bed, nude. A rifle butt was found in her room and a kitchen knife covered in blood was found on the floor just inside the door to her house. The room was in shambles. Her jewelry box and two purses appeared to have been dumped and scattered. Other belongings were discovered near a fence outside her house. Barnes was arrested, tried, and convicted for the murder.

Executed: 03/01/2000

His Last Meal: Justice, Equality, World Peace.

However he was probably served whatever the meal was on the menu in the prison kitchen.

Why perhaps we rushed to judgement a little too quickly in Mr Barnes case:
  • The original defense attorneys appointed by the state failed to investigate, and thus failed to discover and present evidence of Barnes's innocence.
  • The original defense attorneys failed to have evidence that was used to convict Barnes tested by defense experts.
  • Counsel who took over the case for federal appeals sought analysis of the crime scene, fingerprint identification, DNA testing, and additional time to conduct a factual investigation. All these requests were denied.
  • Counsel in federal appeals nonetheless carried out independently funded investigations that yielded substantial evidence that raised doubts about Barnes's guilt.
  • Blood on Barnes's coveralls, part of the evidence used to secure his conviction, contained a preservative found in test tubes used to store blood. The expert opinion of the chemist, hired by the defense, was that it did not come from "original, legitimate crime scene evidence . . . deriving from natural bleeding from a normal human being."
  • The primary eyewitness and his sister saw a man jump a fence near the crime scene one and one-half hours before the victim returned home. The witness told his sister that the man was not Barnes, but testified at trial that it was Barnes.
  • The two main witnesses for the prosecution were implicated in the crime by independent witnesses.
  • The fingerprint on the murder weapon was analyzed by the state and was found not to be Barnes's fingerprint. A defense expert identified the fingerprint as belonging to one of the state's main witnesses.
  • A lamp on which Barnes's fingerprint was found, and that the state claimed had been recently acquired by the victim, had been in the victim's home for at least five years. Barnes had been in the house numerous times and had helped move furniture.
  • Evidence suggests that one of the state's witnesses cut a deal with the District Attorney on two drug charges pending against him in exchange for his testimony, although this was not revealed to Barnes's original trial lawyers.
So much for the justice system. Anyhow, if you wish to enjoy Mr. Barne's last meal, here it is.

How To Prepare Justice, Equality, World Peace Jade Pork.

Ingredients:
1 cup of Justice
1/2 tblsp Equality
2 pounds of World Peace
1-1/2 lbs. pork tenderloins, trimmed and cut into 1/8 inch strips
1 large eggplant
3 stalks of celery
1 large onion
2 tblsp peanut oil
3 tblsp hoisin sauce
1 tblsp black bean paste
1 tblsp of cooking sherry

Preparation:
Take 1 cup of Justice and wash thoroughly. Pat dry and set aside.
Chop celery into bite sized chunks. Do the same with the onions.
Peel and cut eggplant into 1/2 inch cubes.
Take 1/2 tsp of Equality and smash with flat of knife. Put in small cup and set aside.
Wash and devein the World Peace. Make sure you clean out the small sack under the World Peace's stomach as it contains much fecal matter.

Cooking:
Heat wok at high heat on your burner. Pour in peanut oil. Dump in Pork, Justice, Equality and World Peace in wok and fry. Keep stirring until Pork is completely cooked through.
Dump in egglplant, onion, and celery. Keep stirring until eggplant is cooked. You can tell the eggplant is cooked as the cubes start to get soft.
Add in hoisin sauce, black bean paste and sherry. Keep stirring for another minute.

Serve over a bed of white rice.

Japanese Prisoner's Last Meal...

Guess what?
You don't get one! Or I should say, you don't get a "special" last meal.
You see, in Japan, they handle the execution process a little different than here in the United States. In Japan, executions are performed not at prisons, but at detention centers. Those on death row are never sent to prison, but remain in the detention center until an appeal is won or their execution is carried out. The method used is hanging. Executions are usually carried out on Friday mornings, and convicts are not given advance notification. Surviving any Friday past nine a.m. guarantees another week of life. The names of the executed are never announced publicly, and the act of execution may not be acknowledged until well after the event. Even family and attorneys are not informed of the deaths firsthand - they learn of the executions when the detention center requests that a prisoner's possessions or ashes be picked up. Ammesty International is up in arms over how executions are handled and state they are inhumane.

So, let me get this straight...A guy goes out. He's angry at the world. Lashes out and kills some innocent person. That person never got advanced warning that, "Hey, in a few minutes some nut job is going to come up and kill you. Sorry." Yet, that guy is convicted of murder and sentence to death. Furthermore this guy isn't given advanced notification of his death, just like his victim. So, the furror of Ammesty International is the cruelty involved in this? Why is one death treated differently than the other? Should we just pass a law that if you are an aspiring murderer that you give your victim 24hr advanced notice before carrying out the deed?
Talk about crazy...

Thomas Grasso's Last Meal: Big F'ing Wah!

Aw, poor Thomas Grasso. He just didn't get the last meal he wanted. You see, Tommy boy here ordered Spagehetti-O's for his last meal. Instead he got

Spaghetti.

Lethal injection followed. It was a punishment he so deserved for killing an 87 year old woman for her social security check. Poor fella. He gave this last statement before they pumped him with the hearth stopping chemicals on March 20th, 1995.

"I did not get my Spaghetti-O's, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this."

Dammit! Where is the justice?
Screw the murdered 87 year old lady and her SS check for $505 dollars. Where is the justice for Thomas here and his Spaghetti-o's?!? When is the prison system and the media going to wake up and smell the coffe that in a society that treats it's fellons like victims, we need to bend over backwards and satisfy those prisoners special needs.

Baghdad Iraqi Republican Guard's Last Meal...

April 2003. U.S. invades Iraq. As the Marine 1st Division moved toward Baghdad, the Iraqi Republican Guard high tailed it out of the city before the Marines showed up. Their last meal was breakfast before dropping their weapons and packing it in.
They had:

Boiled brown eggs
Sausages
Tea
The Marine division found left over breakfasts in foxholes as they approached the city. Shame those Iraqi soliders couldn't hang around to finish, belch and maybe have a few yucks over the Sunday funnies.

Buddha's Last Meal...

Siddhattha Gotama (b: 563 BC, d: 483 BC), the Lord Buddha. Buddha's last meal sort of reminds me of the joke about how did Buddha order his hot dog?

Answer: Make me one with everything.

Unfortunately for Buddha, he died shortly after eating a special meal that was made in his honor. The meal is called "sukaramaddava" which translates to "soft pork". Many scholars debate on what soft pork could be but accient text shows that the meal itself was

Mushrooms.

Now, Buddha died shortly after the meal. Before he died he suffered from an attack of the dysentery. It's uncertain that he was suffereing from an illness that the mushrooms only escalated or if the mushrooms themselves were poisoned. We'll never know.

What Won't Be In Your Last Meal...

You’re being executed for a crime against humanity. In the United States you get a last meal. It can be anything you want just as long as the prison kitchen can provide it or make it and/or it doesn’t cost more than $20.00. Most requests are granted, but the only requests that are definitely not granted are:

Tobacco and tobacco products e.g.; cigars, cigarettes…, etc.
Alcohol and alcohol products e.g.; beer, wine, liquor…, etc.

These items are against prison policy and are forbidden. Strange since in the old days, when a prisoner was placed before a firing squad, he/she was given a blindfold and a smoke. Boy have the times changed or what?

A Last Meal For China's Prisoners...

If you are a prisoner on death row in China, you are given this typical last meal.

One large mantou (steamed bread) and five(hard-boiled) eggs

or

A large bowl of meat dumplings

Prisoners are then taken to a spot way from the civilian population. Reason being so the prisoners can’t yell out anti-government slogans or speech. The prisoners are trussed up with their arms behind their back and put in a kneeling position. A solider will come around behind each prisoner and put a bullet into the prisoner’s head. It’s obviously a fatal shot. From there the body is rushed to the hospital so the prisoner’s organs are harvested for organ transplant. Usually the harvesting is down against the prisoner’s wishes or family’s wishes. The prisoner’s family is then presented a bill for the bullet used to kill their loved one (usually 6 cents) and the cost of the cremation of the body. If the family refuses to pay, then they don’t get the ashes. Usually the ashes are used as fertilizer for farming.

Oh, yum!

Delbert Teague Jr's Last Meal...

Poor Delbert Teague, Jr. Him and his friend shot and robbed this guy while he was with his girlfriend. Shot the boyfriend in the head and then sexually assaulted the girlfriend back in April of 1985. Sentence to death in September 9th, 1998, he didn't want a last meal. I guess the thought of having his life snuffed sort of killed his appetite. He did, however, have one last meal, at his mother's request. It was

A hamburger.

I can see the discussion on that one:

"Oh, come on honey, you have to eat...To keep up your strength...you know?"
"No Ma, really I'm not hungry."
"Oh no! No son of mine is going to die by lethal injection on an empty stomach. Eat something!"
"Jeez, okay Ma. I'll have a hamburger, fries, and Dr. Pepper."
"No, you'll have broccoli and milk."
"Ma!!!"
"And you're not walking into that chamber dressed like that. You'll wear your navy suit..."
"Ma! Please!!!"
"What was the last time you got a haircut? Oy! You'll embarass me walking to your execution with long hair like that, didn't I raise you right? What WILL my friends at the garden club say?"
Teague calling guard, "Guard! Guard! Kill me now!!!"

Francois Mitterrand's Last Meal Was For The Birds...

Dying of cancer, Francois Mitterrand ordered a last meal of:

Oysters
Foie gras
Capons
L'Ortolan: which is the eating of a Ortolan bird, a tiny, yellow-throated songbird that is illegal to eat in France. The bird is roasted and eaten bones and all.

L'Ortolan recipe is as follows.

Preperation: The birds must be taken alive; once captured they are either blinded or kept in a lightless box for a month to gorge on millet, grapes, andfigs, a technique apparently taken from the decadent cooks of ImperialRome who called the birds beccafico, or 'fig-pecker'. When they'vereached four times their normal size, they're drowned in a snifter ofArmagnac.

Cooking: Simply pop them in a high oven for six to eight minutes and serve.

Eating: When cool, begin to chew. It should take about 15 minutes to work yourway through the breast and wings, the delicately crackling bones, and onto the inner organs. Devotees claim they can taste the bird's entire life as they chew in the darkness: the wheat of Morocco, the salt air of the Mediterranean, the lavender of Provence. The pea-sized lungs and heart, saturated with Armagnac from its drowning, are said to burst in a liqueur-scented flower on the diner's tongue. Enjoy with a good Bordeaux wine.
